Requirements
Portfolios
Students are required to compile a portfolio and submit it for assessment twice a year freshman, sophomore and junior years, and once senior year. Students will be provided information regarding the appropriate format. Portfolios are submitted after fall and spring breaks.
Service Hours
Students are required to perform six fashion-related service hours per academic year. Opportunities to inform, assist, and enhance the lives of others while expanding abilities and promoting the department will be provided.
Sophomore Review
Students file a formal application for acceptance into the fashion merchandising program during sophomore year. They are evaluated by a review board to ascertain the progress of their career preparation. The Board consists of educators, graduates, and business leaders. Formal acceptance is contingent upon the following criteria:
- A minimum 2.5 GPA in all fashion courses completed to that point (Fash 110, 120, 130,250, Mktg 162, 301, and any others completed, along with the liberal studies math component)
- A score of 70% in a test of basic mathematical skills necessary for fashion business success (given fall term)
- Completion of realistic and well-defined short and long term career goals
- Evidence of ongoing fashion work experience
- Ability to succeed in the fashion industry as evidenced by two fashion-related work references and one character reference
Fashion Merchandising Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate with a degree in fashion merchandising from Mercyhurst College, students are required to:
- Have a major G.P.A. of 2.5
- Maintain the overall G.P.A. required by the college
- Have completed 24 service hours
- Have submitted their senior portfolio to the department's satisfaction
- Participated in a senior exit interview with the department chairperson
